Blue Door Bakery opened at 4 Main Street in 2017 when Sonny and Lana Zivanoviec relocated from the Los Angeles area to Jackson, drawn to Amador County through their family’s long connection to Saint Sava Serbian Orthodox Church — the first Serbian Orthodox church in North America, built by miners working the Kennedy and Argonaut gold mines in 1894. Their son Mike, a fourth-generation baker, manages daily operations using a sourdough starter that has been passed down through multiple generations of the family, a living link to Old World bread-making traditions.
The bakery’s signature sourdough undergoes a 36-hour process that produces a loaf with a deep, complex flavor and a crust that shatters when you tear into it. Beyond the bread, the small shop turns out cinnamon buns, muffins, sweet and savory turnovers, and chocolate chip cookies — all of which sell out regularly. There is no seating and no website; Blue Door operates on word of mouth and reputation alone, and the line that forms on weekend mornings speaks for itself. The bakery is cash only, open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM or until the cases are empty, whichever comes first. Customers have been known to drive from neighboring counties and even order loaves shipped nationwide.
