A National Natural Landmark cave featuring rare helictite crystal formations, guided walking tours through three spectacular chambers, and a stunning underground lake 80 feet below the viewing platform.
Black Chasm Cavern is a designated National Natural Landmark located along Pioneer Volcano Road near the historic town of Volcano. Designated by Congress in 1976, the cavern is renowned for its extraordinary displays of helictite crystals — delicate, twisting mineral formations found in fewer than 5% of the world’s caves. Visitors descend into three illuminated chambers where these rare formations grow in abundance, and the second chamber reveals a striking blue lake roughly 80 feet below the viewing platform.
The cave maintains a constant 58 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making it a refreshing escape during Gold Country’s warm summers. Above ground, guests can pan for gold, explore the mineral museum and gift shop, and enjoy the surrounding pine-covered landscape. Tours are suitable for all ages, and the cavern is open seven days a week with extended weekend hours. Holiday hours vary, so visitors should call ahead on major holidays.
