A Romanesque Revival castle built in 1894 as the administration building for the Preston School of Industry, now a National Register historic site offering guided tours, paranormal investigations, and special events.
Preston Castle stands as one of Gold Country’s most striking landmarks — a towering Romanesque Revival structure built in 1894 as the administration building for the Preston School of Industry, a reform school for boys. The castle served the school until 1960, when the state planned its demolition. A determined group of local women fought for eight years to save the building, and the Preston Castle Foundation eventually took over the lease in 2001 and gained full ownership in 2014. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the castle is now preserved as a venue for historical tours, paranormal investigations, and community events.
The Preston Castle Foundation offers a variety of experiences throughout its April-through-August season, from self-guided and docent-led daytime tours to atmospheric flashlight tours and sunset walks. Paranormal enthusiasts can book evening investigations inside the castle’s storied halls. Tours frequently sell out, so advance booking through the foundation’s website is recommended. Special events throughout the year include the popular Haunt in autumn and Christmas at the Castle during the holiday season.
