Las Posadas is a cherished holiday tradition in Sutter Creek, rooted in a 16th-century Spanish custom that recalls the story of Joseph and Mary seeking shelter before the birth of Jesus. The candlelight procession begins at the Immaculate Conception Church on Spanish Street, winds down through town along Main Street, and ends at the stable in front of the Historic Methodist Church.
Everyone is welcome to join the walk, singing familiar Christmas carols and listening to the narration of the ancient story. Children are invited to participate as shepherds, angels, or animals, or to bring a stuffed animal along. Each attendee receives a candle and song booklet upon arrival. Following the procession, cookies and hot beverages are served in the social hall.
The event brings together members of various faith communities across Amador County for an evening of shared celebration during the holiday season. Warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
