Inn at 161

161 Hanford Street, Sutter Creek, CA (209) 267-1039 Website Reservations

The Inn at 161 bills itself as “modern-day lodging with old country charm,” and the tagline fits. The original portion of the building dates to 1897, and for years the property operated as the Grey Gables Bed and Breakfast Inn, styled as an English Country Manor under longtime innkeepers Roger and Sue Garlick. In March 2021, Chris Ferrante and Laura Waltz of Central Coast Hospitality — who met working at the Dream Inn Hotel in Santa Cruz — acquired the property, renamed it the Inn at 161, and renovated it in phases. They converted the former owners’ apartment into an additional guest room, bringing the total to eleven rooms. Under the Grey Gables era, the eight main-house rooms were named after British poets — Byron, Browning, Shelley, Tennyson, and Stevenson among them — a legacy of the property’s English-manor identity.

The Rooms

Today the inn offers five room types across its eleven rooms. Fireplace Queen and Fireplace King rooms feature gas fireplaces, Smart TVs with streaming, and private bathrooms. The Cathedral King Fireplace room adds a clawfoot tub to the mix. The 500-square-foot Carriage House Suite — up two sets of stairs for maximum privacy — is the inn’s most luxurious accommodation, with a Jacuzzi tub for two, dual-head shower, heated bathroom floor, double sinks, and a private patio. For families or groups, the Two-Bedroom Suite offers a king and queen bed, a living room, and a full kitchen, sleeping up to five with a twin roll-away. All rooms include gas fireplaces, individually selected antiques, premium bedding, bathrobes, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi.

Grounds & Amenities

Red-bricked pathways lead through terraced gardens with arbors and seating among vines and flowers, reflecting the property’s English Country Manor heritage. Inside, The Cellar serves as the main gathering room where guests enjoy complimentary specialty coffees, espresso, and cappuccino throughout their stay, along with a complimentary wine and charcuterie reception in the late afternoon. A light morning breakfast is included, served in the formal dining room or delivered to the room. Hanford Street’s quiet, residential setting provides a peaceful contrast to the bustle of Main Street, while keeping visitors within easy walking distance of wine tasting rooms, shops, and restaurants.
