Oko Sushi has been Jackson’s home for Japanese cuisine since 2007, when Lily and Jason On opened the restaurant on Industry Boulevard as the third venture in their small Amador County restaurant family, which also included Panda House in Martell and Hunan Restaurant in Ione. After sixteen years behind the counter, Lily retired and the restaurant passed to Michael “Mike” Goumas, who had trained under Master Chef Andy Matsuda during an intensive two-month sushi course in Los Angeles. Goumas undertook a complete remodel — new flooring, an opened-up layout, a full kitchen replacement, and two custom 8,000-pound saltwater aquariums with live coral that now greet diners as they walk in. Despite the transformation, Goumas kept the recipes and house-made sauces that Lily On developed, preserving the flavors that regulars have relied on for nearly two decades.
Head Chef Nori, a sushi chef with Japanese heritage, leads the kitchen alongside Goumas. The menu spans classic rolls, sashimi, teriyaki, bento boxes, handmade gyoza, and fresh miso soup, along with house favorites like the Chris Roll, Moon Roll, Puff Daddy, and Bay Scallop Roll. The Vegetarian Rocky Roll rounds out the options for non-meat eaters, and the Orange Chicken remains a crowd favorite for those in the mood for something off the sushi bar. Beer, sake, and plum wine are available to pair with your meal.
Open seven days a week for lunch (11:00 AM to 2:30 PM) and dinner (4:30 to 9:00 PM), Oko is one of the most accessible restaurants in Jackson and a welcome change of pace from the region’s steakhouses and diners. With over 500 Google reviews and a 4.3-star rating, it has earned a loyal following that extends well beyond the county line. As Goumas put it after the remodel, “I want people to feel reassured that this is not a new restaurant — the remodel is new, but the core is still there.”
