Taqueria La Esmeralda

535 CA-49, Ste 5, Jackson, CA (209) 217-8155 Website

From a Taco Truck to Three Locations

Taqueria La Esmeralda is the story of the Contreras family — led by Francisco Contreras — who started with a small taco truck in East Sonora over a decade ago and built it into a multi-location restaurant operation. The Jackson location on Highway 49 joined the original Sonora spot, and a third location in Nevada City followed, with plans for Elk Grove in the works. What began as roadside tacos has grown into one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in the Mother Lode, built on generous portions, family recipes, and the kind of consistency that turns first-time visitors into regulars.

The Menu

The menu runs deep — carne asada, carnitas, fajitas, chile verde, chimichangas, and a full lineup of tacos, burritos, and combination plates. The quesabirria tacos and super wet burrito have earned particular praise from regulars, and the pozole rojo and shrimp burritos show up frequently in reviews as standout dishes. Breakfast burritos are available from open, and daily specials keep things fresh for the lunch crowd. With a 4.7-star rating on DoorDash from over a thousand reviews, La Esmeralda has built a reputation that reaches well beyond Amador County.

Jackson’s Casual Mexican Spot

Open seven days a week from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, La Esmeralda fills the role of Jackson’s everyday, walk-up Mexican spot — a complement to El Torero’s sit-down dining experience down the road. The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, the portions are large, and the prices are fair. For visitors passing through on Highway 49 or locals grabbing dinner on the way home, it has become one of those places that just works every time.
