Swensen’s Shoe Store has been a fixture at 155 Main Street since 1984, making it one of Jackson’s longer-running retail businesses. Current owners Adam and Wendy took over around 2013 and have kept the shop’s dual identity intact — part shoe store, part repair shop. That combination has become increasingly rare in an era of disposable footwear, and Swensen’s is believed to be the only cobbler operating in Amador County. In a community where people actually walk Main Street on a regular basis, a good shoe store still matters.
The selection reflects the store’s practical, working-community roots. Swensen’s carries Red Wing and Carhartt for the ranchers and tradespeople, Birkenstock and Born for comfort seekers, Vans and Teva for the younger crowd, Twisted X for western wear, Wrangler apparel, UGG for the cold foothill mornings, and Kamik for wet-weather boots. It is the kind of inventory that serves both the local who needs a new pair of work boots and the visitor who blew out a sole hiking the Kennedy Mine trail.
The repair service is what truly sets Swensen’s apart. Bring in your worn-out boots, your favorite pair of heels, or your grandfather’s leather dress shoes, and Adam and Wendy will assess what can be saved. In a throwaway culture, the ability to resole, restitch, and restore footwear is a craft worth preserving — and Swensen’s is the place in Amador County that still does it. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
