Howard Park — officially Charles Howard Park — is Ione’s premier 90-acre recreational facility, named after Charles S. Howard, the automobile magnate and owner of Seabiscuit, America’s most famous racehorse. The Howard family’s deep ties to Ione and the surrounding region are reflected in the park’s historic horse racetrack, which still stands as a reminder of the area’s equestrian heritage.
The park offers something for everyone: a one-mile walking track, an 18-hole disc golf course, a skate park, a dog park, horseshoe pits, multiple playgrounds, and extensive picnic areas. Two full sports complexes — one for soccer with four regulation fields and one for baseball with four regulation fields plus a t-ball diamond — anchor the park’s youth athletics programs. Snack shacks and restrooms are available at both complexes.
The City of Ione has pursued ongoing improvements to Howard Park, including upgraded sports facilities, enhanced playground equipment, and trail improvements. Dry camping is available during select events. Facility rentals are managed through the City of Ione.
