David and Heather Hopman founded Chaos Glassworks in 2001, and their studio just off Main Street in Sutter Creek has been producing hand-blown glass art ever since. David is a professionally trained zoologist and scuba diver who turned his scientific eye toward the art of glassmaking, working with pigments sourced from around the world to create his larger sculptural pieces — vases, bowls, paperweights, pendant lighting, and floor lamps. Heather was born and raised right here in Amador County and works across an impressive range of mediums including lampworked soft glass beads, ceramics, gourds, metalworking, blown glass, and watercolors. She has studied under renowned glass artists Loren Stump, Robert Mickelson, and Vittorio Constantini, and that training shows in the precision and creativity of her bead jewelry and smaller works.
Nothing here is mass-produced. Every piece comes from the on-site furnace, shaped by hand, each one distinct. The studio is hot and working every Saturday and Sunday year-round, so visitors can watch molten glass take form in real time — and it is genuinely mesmerizing. Functional pieces like bowls and plates sit alongside wearable art and larger sculptural works, and the Hopmans are happy to collaborate on custom orders ranging from statement floor lamps to delicate glass pendants.
The gallery doubles as a working studio, so the creative energy is palpable — you are just as likely to see a new piece being born as you are to find the perfect finished work to bring home. Open Wednesday through Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM, Saturdays from 10 AM to 7 PM, and Sundays from 10 AM to 6 PM, with other times available by appointment.
