The Sutter Creek Gallery has operated as an artist cooperative for over thirty years, guided by a philosophy that keeps things refreshingly simple: art is for everyone. That means approachable prices, a wide range of mediums, and a welcoming atmosphere that never feels stuffy or exclusive. The gallery originally called the old Post Office building at 35 Main Street home, but when that building was sold in February 2020, the cooperative — after a pandemic-delayed search for a new home — made the leap to its current space at 40B Main Street near Cavana’s Deli, reopening on February 6, 2021. The new home features beautiful exposed brick walls that offset the artwork on display, giving the gallery a warm, textured backdrop that feels perfectly suited to a Gold Country town built on stone and ambition.
The cooperative structure is what makes this gallery genuinely different. Co-owners Sandra Campbell and Judy Day took the reins together in 2018, giving the gallery a fresh new look while retaining its original vision. Sandra had joined in 2013 and brings her own artistic practice in soft pastels and mixed media collages. Judy became involved by showing artists’ work before accepting partial ownership, and she is also a watercolor painting instructor. Today, roughly nineteen artists from Amador County — plus contributors from Calaveras County and part-time residents — share the responsibilities of running the space. The mediums are wonderfully diverse: oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings, pastel renderings, mixed media collages, prints, handmade cards, jewelry, photography, pottery, carved gourd art, and fiber arts.
Judy Day handles the gallery’s custom matting and framing services, with more than 75 frame styles available, so a painting or photograph you connect with can leave ready to hang. Open Thursday through Monday from 10 AM to 5 PM, the Sutter Creek Gallery remains one of the best ways to experience the creative depth of Amador County’s artist community firsthand.
