Mark and Lisa Klosowski founded The Music Box Company in 1988 in Tiburon, California. Over the following decade, they expanded to San Francisco and Caesars Lake Tahoe. When the time came to consolidate into a single location, they fell in love with Amador County and chose Sutter Creek as their permanent home, opening on Main Street in 1999. More than twenty-five years later, the store they built remains genuinely unlike anything else in the county — a place that somehow manages to be both a serious collectibles destination and a whimsical escape for anyone who wanders in off the sidewalk.

Room by Room

The store is organized into distinct rooms, each with its own character. The dedicated Disney room immerses visitors in beloved characters and films with Disney music playing overhead — a space that delights children and nostalgic adults in equal measure. The year-round Christmas room is its own world: animated villages with rotating trains, nutcrackers, snowmen, Santas, lanterns, and musical snow globes fill every surface, making it feel like the holidays no matter what month you visit. The main floor is where the namesake music boxes live, from classic ballerinas to exquisite hand-inlaid Italian musical jewelry boxes, which remain among the store’s most sought-after items.

The Eclectic Rest of It

The Klosowskis are collectors at heart, and the inventory reflects that. Rock and roll memorabilia sits alongside Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Game of Thrones collectibles, puzzles, vintage-style lunch boxes, playing cards, and hand-crafted artistic clocks — many made from repurposed vinyl records and manufactured in the USA. The baby gift selection is strong enough to be a destination on its own — a reliable stop for anyone who needs something memorable and personal.

The store has deep roots in the community. To celebrate their 25th anniversary in Sutter Creek in August 2024, the Klosowskis offered a 15% discount throughout the month to customers with Amador County or Calaveras County identification — a gesture that speaks to how much this transplanted Tiburon business has become a genuine part of the Gold Country fabric.
