Preston Castle

900 Palm Dr, Ione, CA (209) 256-3623 Website

Preston Castle is a Romanesque Revival building constructed in 1894 as the administration building for the Preston School of Industry, a reform school for boys established in 1890. The bricks used in construction were made at San Quentin and Folsom prisons. At its peak, the facility housed 800 wards, employed 200 staff, and operated approximately 50 buildings across 1,000 acres. The school closed in 1960, and in 2014 the Preston Castle Foundation gained full ownership of the castle and 12.91 acres. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the castle is now open to the public for guided and self-guided tours, paranormal investigations, and community events throughout the year.
